Q.Is there anything I can take to kill Helicobacter pylori bacteria besides penicillin, Biaxin and tetracycline? I’m allergic to all the above. My gastroenterologist sent me to an infectious disease doctor. He says he can’t do anything if I can’t take those medications.

B.

A.Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a common type of bacterium found in the human stomach.

Although H. pylori infection causes no problems in most people, it can lead to stomach and duodenal ulcers in a minority of cases.

It has also been implicated in stomach cancer and lymphoma, although these are rare diseases.

H. pylori is often diagnosed by pathologic examination of a biopsy sample obtained through an endoscopic examination of the stomach. It can also be diagnosed by a blood test.
