The lifestyle center’s atmosphere can be enhanced for relatively little cost by making strategic trades with key members and local businesses.

The more children’s programs offered, the better. Indoor and outdoor child-care facilities are ideal. If the programs and facility appeals to kids, moms and dads will come more often. Lounge areas are comfortable, enclosed areas where people can relax, have a cup of coffee, read, visit, listen to music or watch a video. Menus from local restaurants are available for people who want to pick up a take-out dinner on the way home. The area also offers a computer, CD-ROM, fax/modem and printer. Massage chairs are provided. The whole idea is to create a place that members can call their own that offers other “healthy” experiences , in addition to exercise.

Lifestyle centers with meeting space benefit from the growing interest in adult continuing education programs. Facilities produce quarterly catalogues of classes and programs and distribute them throughout the community. Topics aren’t limited to health and fitness either. The key is finding interesting, knowledgeable people in the community who are motivated to share their expertise and gain exposure.

Programming. The greatest challenge for the lifestyle center is to diversify its programming beyond just cardiovascular and resistance training. Examples include swing dancing, Tai Chi, healthy cooking classes, dog obedience classes or simply taking a group of people for outdoor walks. If the facility has the space for it, a community garden is a terrific draw, particularly for older adults. Food can be grown and served as part of a cooking demonstration or potluck dinner party.

In a sense, the lifestyle center is like a private community recreation program. It continuously offers a variety of activities that members can experience both in and out of the center. All programming features a strong social component. The lifestyle concept is not only about conditioning and training — it’s about enjoying life, developing relationships and being active.

Marketing. The time has come for a new marketing message. Lifestyle centers differentiate themselves from traditional health clubs by shifting their marketing message from “the way you’ll look” to “the way you’ll feel.” No more references to couch potatoes, New Year’s resolutions, bathing suit season or state-of-the-art facilities. Instead of suggesting that there’s something wrong with people, lifestyle centers promote a more accepting, inviting message. The center has a strong spokesperson who regularly goes out into the community and promotes at corporations, community organizations, women’s groups, seniors groups, childbirth education classes, etc. Lifestyle centers focus their marketing efforts on word-of-mouth advertising, special events and local publicity campaigns, rather than print and direct-mail media. Local television advertising appears to be a promising avenue, as well.

The time is now
The aging of America. A managed care system striving to reduce health care utilization. A growing concern over quality-of-life issues. Child-care shortages. Social isolation. Never before has our society been more ready for the lifestyle center concept. The business opportunity that a lifestyle center presents is significant enough that many health clubs are already heading in this direction. Among the approaches being explored are club conversions, free-standing satellite facilities and facilities within facilities.

The time is now for the next generation of health clubs. The question is: Is the health and fitness industry ready and able to capitalize on the opportunity?

If health clubs want to attract the inactive market, they need to offer more than just physical fitness. They need to create a place that enriches peoples lives on an emotional level as well. People pay to go to places that feel good to them — restaurants, movies, resorts, museums, national parks. These are examples of nice places where people get their needs met; where they can enjoy emotionally and physically satisfying experiences; where they can escape temporarily from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Wouldn’t it be nice if a health club could be such a place? If coming to a health club evoked the feeling of strolling through an art gallery; curling up in a comfortable chair; enjoying a good novel; taking a walk through the woods; enjoying a wonderful meal or getting together with an old friend. These are the things in life that make people smile; the kinds of things that leave most of us wanting more.

The next generation health club
A small, but growing number of health clubs are successfully making the shift toward attracting the inactive market. Called “lifestyle centers,” these facilities are designed, staffed and marketed with the intention of attracting people who have never been members of health clubs. The underlying objective of these facilities is to create an environment where people can enjoy themselves with or without exercise. Here’s a brief overview of the lifestyle center concept:

Personnel. The lifestyle center’s personnel is hired and trained with a primary mission — to create a sense of community within the club by building relationships with and between members. The staff’s job is not only to talk to people but to listen to them. They learn how to ask questions that encourage interaction and draw people out. Instead of members staring at television sets while they’re exercising, staff facilitate group conversations. “Who’s going to win the Academy Awards? What are your favorite video movies of all time? What vacation have you taken that you really enjoyed? Any recommendations for new restaurants?” The goal is to create a social atmosphere where there is plenty of sharing, compassion, energy, enthusiasm, empathy and laughter.

In the lifestyle center, staff meetings are held on a regular basis to discuss member relations. “I’ve got a member who is struggling with this.” Or, “this member is interested in meeting with people, and we’re having a hard time getting her connected. Any suggestions?” “Are we doing everything possible to meet the needs of our members?” The purpose of these meetings is to problem-solve, brainstorm and develop staff communication skills.

Facility. The lifestyle center concept is ideally suited for suburban areas with high concentrations of middle- to upper-income professionals with children. The facility is centrally located with at least 5,000 to 10,000 square feet devoted to an exercise area (studio, circuit and cardio areas), a children’s center, meeting space, a member lounge, reception area, offices and changing areas.

We invite you and your loved one to easy obtain the lowest phone card tariffs plus also purchase your long distance calling cards online. Commit cheap international or local phone calls immediately.

The lifestyle center is a way to get around inactive people’s strong immunity to health clubs’ traditional features-and-benefits approach to marketing.

When it comes to fitness, there are two types of people — Those Who Do and Those Who Don’t. The Those Who Do are the minority. These are the folks who join health clubs because they want to be in shape. They’re willing to put in the time and the energy to “condition” their bodies. They’ll take classes. They’ll use the equipment and periodically adjust their frequency, intensity and duration to further challenge themselves. If it’s fun, great. If it isn’t, they’ll watch TV or read a magazine to help pass the time. Either way, they have the discipline and the commitment to “do” fitness.

The Those Who Do , on the other hand, represent the majority of Americans. They don’t have the desire to engage in the “process of fitness.” They’re not interested in spending time in a room filled with exercise equipment — they don’t consider themselves athletes, and they won’t join a club where they’re surrounded by people who are. Whereas the Those Who Do exercise to achieve a specific physiological result, the Those Who Don’t choose to be active simply because it gives them pleasure.

Although much has been written and spoken about attracting the inactive, the majority of health clubs simply don’t appeal to this market.

Failing to convert the unconverted
Over the past few decades, the health and fitness industry has evolved based on the needs and wants of the Those Who Do. Clubs have become bigger and better, filled with only the latest and greatest equipment. Fitness instructors and personal trainers have increased their knowledge and skill in the areas of exercise testing, program design and instruction. And, the latest generation of exercise clothing now wicks, cushions, supports and stabilizes better than ever.

Although these advances have presumably enhanced the growth of the fitness industry, they’ve hindered efforts to attract the inactive market. Health clubs have traditionally taken a features/benefits approach to advertising and sales, striving to convince prospects that the club will help them achieve their fitness goals. An active, club-oriented individual might be positively influenced by the latest technology in exercise equipment. The inactive person usually isn’t. To the committed fitness enthusiast, certified personal trainers may be perceived as a benefit. To the uninitiated, however, the concept of a personal trainer is intimidating. The point is that clubs that proudly promote a “state of the art” message have difficulty attracting the inactive market. A business strategy based on the objective of converting the Those Who Don’t into Those Who Do is flawed and destined to fail.

Our staff attract you to easy obtain the cheapest calling card costs and buy your cheap calling cards online. Commit discount international or local phone calls immediately.

Decorating your child’s room can be quite a challenge. Storage requirements and style whims change from year to year, and it can be difficult to establish a design that will last through the ages. Here are some tips and ideas to help you create a functional — but fun! — room that will satisfy your child’s needs as he or she grows up.

Plan for the future

Consider the needs of your future thirteen-year-old when you’re buying for your three-year-old. You have to expect updates through the years, but you can also make basic choices that will grow with your child. Look for the classic rather than the whimsical or trendy. Realize that children accumulate “stuff” (and more stuff!) through the years, and allow for flexible expansion of storage space. (A petite three-drawer lingerie chest might be adorable for baby clothes, but won’t contain a preteen’s bulky sweaters and jeans.)

Choose classic wallcoverings in neutral colors. They can easily be enhanced by using borders or wall appliques, or by hanging pictures suited to your child’s age and interests. It’s a much bigger prospect, however, to completely redo nursery-themed wallpaper or to paint over baby pink walls.

Use interchangeable items to carry out a short-lived theme: sheets, curtains, throw pillows, and wall hangings can be easily updated to reflect your child’s interests. With themes from cartoon characters to funky geometrics, these accessories are a great source of decorating inspiration.

Go for the durable

Let’s face it — kids are rough on stuff! Chances are the bed will do double duty as a jungle gym from time to time. Floors are likely to suffer spills. Walls will bear the brunt of fingerprints, and probably at some point, uncommissioned artwork.

Choose materials that can tolerate the punishment that kids dish out. Look for washable vinyl wall coverings or glossy paint finishes that can be wiped down. Select flooring that is easy to keep clean and stain-resistant, like hardwood, wood laminate, or stain-resistant carpeting. Another factor for consideration is soundproofing — carpeting is a good bet for muffling the loud music that your teen prefers!

Play it safe

Kids spend a lot of time in their bedrooms. Unfortunately, that gives them a lot of time to uncover hidden dangers. Create a safe environment by avoiding furniture with sharp corners, bins or toy boxes that can slam shut, and unstable accessories that can topple over. Secure dressers and bookshelves to the wall, and discourage climbers by keeping toys on lower shelves. Don’t stack furniture by the windows. Choose safe window treatments without cords or loops that children can become entangled in.

While bunk beds are a popular choice for families, children under age six should be kept off the top bunk. Make sure that the bunks have guard rails and a secure ladder.

And of course, your child’s room — and all the bedrooms in your home — should be equipped with a smoke detector.

Involve your child

While children should be allowed to create rooms that matches their individual styles, of course parents have the final say. If you’re redecorating, go on a scouting mission on your own. Choose three or four suitable samples from product showrooms or catalogs, and then let your child make the final selection.

Give your children lots of opportunity to display their artwork and treasured collections. Cork or bulletin boards, chalkboards, and shadow boxes are all good ways to provide a showcase. Encourage kids to express themselves.

A bedroom should be a place where a child feels safe, secure, and comfortable. Now that you’ve got these basics in place, check out our Hot Tips and articles for fun style ideas submitted by Moms.

A house development just as kitchen remodel project it is a great way to add cost of house and modernize a place which you see and use all day.

Q: Do scooters pose risk of injury for children?

A: As with any activity that requires repetitive and vigorous movements, necessary must be taken in order to avoid injury or an accident. One common injury from scooters results from riders dragging their leg in order to slow down. This action increases the risk of injury to the medial collateral ligament, which is the part of the knee. Encourage your children to use the scooter’s brake to slow down and stop.

To avoid stress injuries due to overuse, show your children how to perform leg stretches after playing on the scooters. Limit their riding to half-hour intervals. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, most people ride so that one leg is devoted to pushing off and propelling them along while the other leg always holds the weight and maintains balance. This imbalance can lead to extra strain on the legs. Again, stretching as well as strengthening exercises will help avoid injury. Also, instruct your children to alternate sides of the scooter.

Protective gear such as a padded helmet, kneepads, elbow pads and wrist guards are essential in protecting the child from injury that could result from a fall. The speed of scooters raises the likelihood that a fall will cause injury to the body part that absorbs the impact.

It’s great to buy gifts for your children that promote physical activity, and scooters are no exception. Taking a few precautions will ensure that the gift provides years of pleasure.

Prepared out of variety organic compounds, minerals, foot pads are meant to be worn overnight to boosting your energy levels, metabolism, blood circulation.

What to Avoid

Alcohol – STOP

Avoid alcoholic beverages during pregnancy.
Alcohol use has been linked with fetal alcohol syndrome.
Fetal alcohol syndrome is marked by physical and mental retardation of the baby.
Caffeine – CAUTION

Limit your caffeine intake during pregnancy.
Caffeine is found in coffee, tea and some carbonated beverages, especially colas.
Caffeine is also found in chocolate.
Aim for less than 200 milligrams of caffeine daily (one or two cups of coffee).
Do not drink so much coffee or cola that you neglect to drink enough milk or juice.
To lessen caffeine withdrawal symptoms, taper off your intake over several weeks.
Vitamin supplements – CAUTION

Do not take vitamins other than prescribed prenatal supplements without checking with your doctor. If your doctor has prescribed a prenatal

supplement, be sure to take it as directed. Taking it with orange or grapefruit juice, or other foods rich in vitamin C, will enhance the

absorption of iron in the supplement.
Remember that excessive amounts of vitamin A have been linked with birth defects.
One study of 22,000 women taking vitamin A (in the form of retinol, not beta-carotene) showed that one of every 57 who took more than 10,000 IU

had a baby with birth defects of the brain, head, heart or spinal cord. (Source: Rothman, et al. Teratongenicity of high Vitamin A intake. N Engl

J Med; 1995; 333: 1369-73)
Limit your consumption of liver, which contains large amounts of retinol.
If you eat fortified foods, avoid eating too much of those with high retinol content.
Choose foods rich in beta-carotene, such as fruits and vegetables, as an alternative to foods containing large amounts of retinol.
Artificial sweeteners – CAUTION

Consider eliminating or limiting your use of saccharin or aspartame.
Saccharin has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
Aspartame use during pregnancy is still somewhat controversial.
Regardless of whether or not aspartame poses significant risks, filling up on diet sodas and other foods containing aspartame and lacking in

nutrients is not a good idea.
Food poisoning suspects – CAUTION

Be aware that you may be especially susceptible to bacteria that cause food poisoning.
Cook meat, eggs and poultry thoroughly to kill bacteria that may be present.
Avoid raw foods, such as sushi or clams.
Reheat leftovers until they are steaming hot.
Avoid unpasteurized dairy products.
Shark and Swordfish – CAUTION

Limit your consumption of shark or swordfish, which may contain high levels of methyl mercury, to once a month.
Eat a wide variety of other types of fish and seafood more often than once a month; they can be an important part of a healthy diet.
Be sure to buy fish and seafood from a reputable source, and cook it thoroughly.

Morning Sickness/Heartburn/Constipation

Traveling along the road of pregnancy, you may experience some common discomforts that will make the ride a bit bumpy. Perseverance and gentle

guidance should make it easier to get past the road bumps. Try these tips.

Morning Sickness

Drink liquids between, rather than with, meals.
Relax after meals, but do not lie flat.
Keep crackers or other dry, crunchy food in your purse or at your bedside.
Do not allow too much time to pass between meals. (Small snacks will help.)
Salty and sour foods, such as pretzels and lemonade, may do the trick.
If you are inside when it happens, go outside for some fresh air.

Despite its name, this common feeling of nausea may be experienced at any time of day. It might help to know that most of the symptoms lessen or stop by the end of the first trimester.

Heartburn

Try eating pineapple or drinking pineapple juice. Pineapple contains natural substances that may lessen the severity of heartburn.
Eat small, frequent meals.
Avoid peppermint, chocolate, caffeine and spicy foods.
Do not eat just before bedtime.
Limit consumption of fatty or greasy foods.
Constipation

Eat more high-fiber foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole-grain breads and cereals.
Get more physical activity; try taking a walk.
Be sure to drink plenty of water, juice and other fluids.
Never take laxatives without your doctor’s approval.
